Allergy Types

Animal Allergy

Pets are a major source of allergens, with cats being the second major source of indoor allergen.1

Allergens are not in the animals’ fur (contrary to popular belief), it is their coats that are very good “transporters” of allergens. Pet allergy is caused by the protein in a pet’s saliva, urine or dander (shed skin particles). Cat allergen is particularly persistent and can remain in homes long after a cat is no longer there.2 A high proportion of Irish families keep cats and the allergens they produce tend to stay in the house for long periods.1

Animal danders may induce hayfever and asthma symptoms, or they may produce skin reactions such as urticaria.2
