Exam Season Relief Not to Be Sniffed At

The exam season sits right in the middle of the grass pollen season and given that around 90% of hayfever sufferers are allergic to grass this can cause symptoms such sneezing, itchy watery eyes, blocked and runny nose for children with hayfever. Add to this hayfever being linked to sleep disturbances in up to 88% of children, with hayfever, which can cause fatigue and decreased cognitive function, children suffering with hayfever can be at a disadvantage during exam time.

Research has shown that 40% of children, with hayfever, can drop a grade between mocks and final exams in the summer due to suffering with hayfever.

Starting Fresh with Hayfever: What Young Adults Should Know Before Moving Out

Hayfever affects both adults and children, so it is important to prepare young adults for life away from home at university or starting out on their own. Your young person may find allergies become worse as they adapt to living away from home and this can be due to stress, change of living conditions, and other changes to a new way of living etc.

Choosing the right allergy relief medication for you and your child is important. If you or your child regularly suffer from hayfever in the summer, taking an antihistamine, such as Zirtek, regularly, through the hayfever season can be more effective at controlling your hayfever than only taking them occasionally on the high pollen days.

Here are some hints and tips to help prepare your young person:

  • Once aged 16 or over HSE recognises people as able to consent to their own treatment. Education and awareness of their allergies and known the triggers should help them to manage the symptoms.
  • Encourage them to take control of their allergies – understand how to recognise and treat allergic reactions themselves.
  • Take their allergy medication, as recommended by GP or pharmacist – this is an essential part of managing allergies.
  • Help them to understand any changes or worsening of their condition, know when and where to seek help. This may be a phone call home for reassurance, visit to the pharmacy or GP.
  • Find the local pharmacies and medical services near to where they will be living.
